The Northeast District RCMP is asking people to be aware about fraudulent activity on social media.
An individual or individuals will post an item for sale on social media, when someone shows interest, a request is made that money be sent electronically to reserve the item. Once the payment is received, the advertisement is deleted and the seller cannot be reached to arrange the completion of the transaction.
So far, six complaints are being investigated by the RCMP in the Acadian Peninsula between Tracadie-Sheila and Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël.. The amount of money stolen, ranges in amounts up to $500 dollars. Items posted for sale include children's toys and kitchen appliances.
There could be more victims and this fraud could be present or attempted in other parts of New Brunswick.
The RCMP encourage everyone who purchases items through social media , to avoid making electronic payments before seeing the items in person. If you have been victim of such a fraud, please contact your local police force.
