Man charged for excessive speeding following joint traffic initiative by RCMP NL and RNC

On October 23, 2019, RCMP Traffic Services East partnered with Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) to monitor speeds of eastbound traffic on the Trans Canada Highway near Thomas Pond.

A vehicle was observed traveling at a high rate of speed, with the radar unit, recording a speed of 163 kms/hr in the 100kms/hr zone.

The driver, a 18-year-old man from Harbour Grace, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding more than 51 kms/hr. Police suspended his driver's licence for seven days and impounded his vehicle for three days.

Motorists are reminded of the dangers of traveling at excessive speeds, especially at night when visibility is reduced. RCMP NL will continue to improve road safety in the province.
