On October 23, 2019, RCMP Traffic Services East partnered with Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) to monitor speeds of eastbound traffic on the Trans Canada Highway near Thomas Pond.

A vehicle was observed traveling at a high rate of speed, with the radar unit, recording a speed of 163 kms/hr in the 100kms/hr zone.

The driver, a 18-year-old man from Harbour Grace, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding more than 51 kms/hr. Police suspended his driver's licence for seven days and impounded his vehicle for three days.
