On May 15, 2019, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Flower's Cove RCMP responded to a structure fire at the fish plant in Black Duck Cove.
Dangerous chemicals were reported to be on site which resulted in a number of explosions. The area was evacuated, including some nearby residences.
When police arrived on scene, the structure was fully engulfed in flames. Due to burning chemicals, firefighters were restricted in their efforts to combat the blaze and focused on public safety and containing the scene.
All employees evacuated the fish plant without injury. Police and firefighters secured the scene to ensure public safety.
At this time, police and firefighters remain on scene. The Office of the Fire Commissioner has been engaged and is attending to continue with the investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
There is currently no risk to the public and all residents have returned to their homes. The loss of this business is significant to the community of Black Duck Cove and surrounding area.
