On September 6, 2019, a member of the Strathcona County RCMP Detachment was charged with a criminal offence following a police investigation.
The charge resulted from an incident which took place on Aug. 31, 2019. Constable Matthew Howson, 35, entered into an altercation at his residence with a member of the public while he was off-duty. Following an investigation, the member was charged with assault.
Cst. Howson, who has been a member of the RCMP for 10 years, has been released on his own recognizance. His court appearance is set for October 16, 2019, at the Sherwood Park Provincial Court. He is currently off-duty and his duty status is under review but has yet to be released. Once the criminal charges have been resolved, his duty status will again be reviewed.
