The Codiac Regional RCMP and City of Moncton are partnering to raise crime prevention awareness in the downtown Moncton area. A member of the Codiac RCMP Community Policing Unit and a dedicated by-law enforcement officer will be conducting regular foot patrols along Main Street between King Street and Vaughn Harvey Boulevard.

They will focus on crime prevention education by working with businesses and property owners. As a continuation of a project from earlier this year, police and by-law enforcement officers will also look at panhandling and homelessness in the downtown by making sure these individuals are aware of the organizations and services that are available to provide assistance.

During their patrols, police and by-law enforcement officers will be meeting with business and property owners to get a better understanding of the issues that affect their businesses.

"Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is one of the crime prevention programs that will be offered," says Eric Larose, Codiac RCMP Community Policing Unit Manager. "The program identifies urban and environmental designs of properties and their surroundings that can be changed to deter crime."

Downtown Moncton Centre-ville Inc. has been consulted on the initiative and is working with police and the city on this initiative.
