News release

A 33-year-old Prince Edward Island man has been charged in relation to an armed robbery in Saint-Basile, New Brunswick, that sent a man and a woman to hospital in September.

Shawn Casey Smith, of Charlottetown, P.E.I., appeared in Edmundston Provincial Court on October 30, 2018 and was charged with two counts of robbery, and one count each of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, being unlawfully in a dwelling-house, and breach of probation.

Just before 7 p.m. on September 16, 2018, the Saint-Léonard RCMP responded to a report of an armed robbery at a residence in the Saint-Basile Local Service District.

Investigators determined a man entered the home and demanded money from the residents. A man and a woman were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following an altercation with the suspect, who had a knife.

Smith was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on January 11, 2019 in Edmundston Provincial Court.
