On June 7th, 2018, the Province enacted new Highway Traffic Act regulations in an effort to address excessive speeding and resultant collisions on our highways. Penalties include increased fines, vehicle seizure and impoundment authorities, in addition to license suspensions.
On June 21, 2018, Marystown RCMP intercepted a vehicle travelling at 60 km over the posted speed limit on the Burin Peninsula Highway. The driver of the speeding vehicle had his vehicle impounded and the man's drivers license was suspended for seven days.
While police were still on scene with this vehicle, another vehicle was stopped for driving too quickly. Subsequently, the driver of the second vehicle was found to have a quantity of Cannabis which was seized. Charges were laid under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Marystown RCMP reminds the public to be mindful of their speed and driving behaviour. Individuals are also reminded that Cannabis is not yet legal and even when it is legal, there will be many regulations. As with all Provincial and Federal Statutes, people are encouraged to make themselves aware of the rules and restrictions in the new legislation when it becomes available.
