On November 7, 2018 at approximately 2200 hours the Iqaluit RCMP and Fire Department responded to the first of six fires in a span of six hours which occurred within the city.
On November 8, 2018 while on patrol, at approximately 1:40 AM, Iqaluit RCMP observed smoke coming from the back of the Northmart building and took immediate action by evacuating the store employees and the neighbouring elder's residences.
Throughout the six hours the first responders attended four vehicle fires, one rubbish fire set against an uninhabited residence and a commercial business – Northmart.
Despite the devastating loss of property, no people sustained injuries.
The Iqaluit RCMP are working in conjunction with the Government of Nunavut's Fire Marshall office and now have two local youth in custody with criminal charges pending for Arson / Disregard for human life.
"We would like to thank the community for its patience despite the devastating loss" said Inspector Mark Crowther, District Commander Qikiqtani District, "RCMP and Fire personnel are working diligently to ensure public safety and bring those responsible to justice."
