A distracted driving campaign by the St. Stephen RCMP has resulted in a total of 32 tickets issued.
St. Stephen RCMP began a distracted driving enforcement campaign on April 1 after noticing an increase in the number of drivers using hand-held cell phones in their cars. The majority of tickets were handed out at the beginning of the month. By the end of April, RCMP members were continuing the stepped-up enforcement but observed a decrease in the number of distracted drivers.
"We all know distracted driving causes serious injuries, or even deaths. We all know it's illegal," says Sgt. Stubbs. "We will continue to enforce the distracted driving law with a zero-tolerance approach. So please put down your phones while driving – it's not worth the consequences."
A ticket for distracted driving can result in a fine of $172.50 and three demerit points from a driver's licence.
