2018 Gender and Harassment Advisory Committee Annual Report - Alberta (K Division)

Background

K Division held our first divisional committee meeting on 2018-01-24. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Terms of Reference and provide recommendations to the Workforce Culture and Employee Engagement Unit.

Our recommendations were submitted on February on 2018-02-27. The majority of the recommendations were around the wording in the TOR. The committee members suggested a more positive connotation with the words that are used including the title of the committee. In addition, recommendations were made to refer to "all employees and volunteers in various positions" rather than using the word "women". The Division priorities include promoting employee wellness through continued education on all aspects of employee mental health and overall wellness.

In addition to reviewing the TOR our general discussion revolved around how to make changes in our culture. We spoke of the importance of awareness, education and positive reinforcement. The need to change the way we speak and the importance of management leading by example.

Current status

  • For our next meeting we intend to invite the K Division Informal Conflict Management Practitioner and the Peer to Peer Coordinator to present. One committee member withdrew her membership and the CO named a replacement.
  • We are in the process of hiring a "Mental Health Educator" for the division.
  • Once that person is in place, they will be asked to attend the committee meeting as well.
  • The Committee in K Division will be known as the "Divisional Respect, Inclusion & Equity Advisory Committee"

Our next committee meeting is scheduled for May 3, 2018.
