Investigative Recap

April 21: At approximately 6:30 p.m., Buffalo Narrows RCMP received a report of an armed individual at a residence in Buffalo Narrows.

Officers responded immediately and contained the scene. Buffalo Narrows RCMP made attempts to have the suspects vacate the residence. Saskatchewan RCMP's Critical Incident Response Team was engaged to assist.

One adult female and three adult males were arrested at the scene.

During subsequent investigation, officers located and seized two rifles, two sawed-off shotguns, ammunition, knives, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and multiple cans of bear spray with defaced labels inside the residence.

21-year-old Johnny Thompson from Buffalo Narrows is charged with:

  • five counts, possession of weapon contrary to order, Section 117.01(3), Criminal Code;
  • two counts, possession of a restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammunition without license/registration, Section 95(2), Criminal Code;
  • one count, possession of a weapon obtained by crime, Section 96(2), Criminal Code;
  • three counts, careless use of a firearm, Section 86(1), Criminal Code;
  • four counts, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, Section 92(3), Criminal Code;
  • one count, restrict/obstruct peace officer, Section 129(a), Criminal Code; and
  • one count, pointing a firearm, Section 87(2), Criminal Code.

The other three individuals arrested at the scene were later released without charge.

La Loche RCMP, Turnor Lake RCMP, Dillon RCMP, Meadow Lake Police Dog Services, Saskatchewan RCMP's General Investigation Section (GIS), and National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST) assisted in this investigation.

Johnny Thompson appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on April 24, 2024.

April 28: La Ronge RCMP performed a traffic stop on Highway #102 and as a result of investigation, searched the vehicle. They located and seized approximately 50 bottles of hard liquor, 48 coolers and a box of wine. Investigation determined the alcohol was being transported for illegal sale on Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation.

As a result of continued investigation, an adult male is charged with unlawful keeping of beverage alcohol, Section 138(1), Alcohol and Gaming Act. He is scheduled to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on May 27, 2024.

Saskatchewan RCMP remind residents that it's illegal to sell alcohol without a license. Licensing is in place to ensure alcohol is sold in a safe and responsible way.
