April 25, 2024, L Div RCMP Headquarters – RCMP and Provincial Conservation Officers teamed up over the weekend resulting in 62 recreational fishers checked, two arrests, and a fine for failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

During the first week of recreational fishing season RCMP Traffic Services Officers and Conservation Officers with the Department of Justice and Public Safety paired up to amplify their impact while patrolling throughout PEI. Over the two days, 62 recreational fishers were checked without incident.

While working together officers also made two arrests.

Alexandra, PE – At 9:39 a.m., on Saturday, April 20, the combined team conducted a traffic stop resulting in the arrest of a driver for prohibited driving. The vehicle was impounded for six months and the 33-year-old man was issued a summary offence ticket of $1550.00 for failing to comply with ignition interlock condition and was released with a court date of May 29th, 2024 to answer to the charge of prohibited driving.

Mount Albion, PE – At 10:47 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, officers conducted a traffic stop resulting in the arrest of a driver for impaired by cannabis. The driver was issued a seven-day driving suspension and his vehicle was impounded for three days. Police are awaiting blood sample lab results before laying charges.

While officers were dealing with removing this vehicle, a collision occurred at this scene. A 74-year-old driver failed to slow when they approached emergency vehicles and struck another car. The driver left the scene, police stopped them and they were issued a fine for failing to stop at the scene of an accident. No one was injured in this collision.

"The PEI RCMP and Conservation Officers would like to remind Islanders that it is the law to reduce your speed to half the posted speed limit and move over a lane if safe to do so when passing stopped emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated including police, conservation, fire department vehicles, ambulances and tow trucks," says Corporal Gavin Moore, PEI RCMP's Media Relations Officer.
