On April 1, 2024, at approximately 9:55 pm, Powerview RCMP received a report of an assault that occurred at a residence on Highway 11 in the RM of Alexander.

Officers immediately attended and located a seriously injured adult female outside the residence and an adult male holding a young child.
Officers determined that the adult male was the suspect and when officers approached him, he ran into the residence with the child.

Attempts were made for him to hand over the child to family members on scene or police, but he refused.

The male was agitated and erratic. He threatened officers and family members. When the suspect put the child down, an officer reacted quickly, picked up the child and got her to safety. The suspect rushed towards officers and a Conducted Energy Weapon was deployed but had no effect. The suspect assaulted officers by biting and punching. The suspect then ran out the back of the residence into a shed.
The child was not physically injured during the incident.

Officers contained the area and called for back-up and Police Dog Services. Police Service Dog Mack, along with officers, entered the shed and located the suspect hiding. The suspect was combative. While being placed into custody, he assaulted officers by biting, punching and kicking. He was arrested and placed into custody and taken to hospital as a precaution.

The adult female suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital and later transported to Winnipeg for further treatment.

Several officers sustained minor injuries. One officer was treated and released in hospital.

A 36-year-old male has been charged with:

Attempt Murder
Assault on Peace Officer Causing Bodily Harm
Assault on Peace Officer x4
Uttering Threats x3
Resisting Arrest
Mischief

He was remanded into custody. The suspect will not be named to protect those who were victims in this incident.
Powerview RCMP continue to investigate.
