A man will appear in court later this week following two arrests for impaired driving in the same afternoon, one involving a transport truck and the other involving a farm tractor.
On July 23, 2022, around 12 p.m., the Kings District RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver involving a transport truck in the Cardigan area.
Police quickly located and pulled over the vehicle. The driver, a 64-year-old man from Brudenell, failed a roadside screening test. He was arrested and transported to the Montague RCMP Detachment, where further testing confirmed his breath samples to be almost twice the legal limit. The man was released from custody pending a future court appearance. He was issued a 90-day driver's license suspension, and the transport truck was impounded at his expense.
Only a few hours later, around 4.p.m., RCMP received another report of a possible impaired driver, this time involving a farm tractor on Route 5 near Cardigan. When police located the vehicle and stopped it, members identified the driver as the same individual involved in the earlier incident involving the transport truck. A roadside screening test was administered at the scene, which the driver failed. The tractor was impounded at his expense. He was arrested at the scene and transported to the Montague RCMP Detachment, where further testing confirmed his breath samples to be over the legal limit.
The man was held in custody overnight. The following day, he was released on conditions pending a court appearance in Georgetown Provincial Court on July 28, at 9:30 a.m.
The Kings District RCMP would like to thank the public for their ongoing efforts to help keep Island roadways safe. Impaired drivers put themselves and everyone around them at risk of a serious collision, or worse. If you are aware of or suspect someone to be driving while impaired, please call 9-1-1 immediately in a safe manner. Providing as much information as possible regarding the vehicle, driver, location, and direction of travel can help police get impaired drivers off the road.
The investigation is continuing.
