RCMP response to the Mass Casualty Commission

The RCMP is cooperating fully with the Mass Casualty Commission, which is the independent Joint Federal/Provincial Inquiry established on October 21, 2020, to examine the horrific events of April 18 and 19 2020, in Nova Scotia. We are providing materials on an ongoing basis in support of the Commission's independent mandate to examine the incidents and provide meaningful recommendations to help protect Canadians in the future.

What took place in Northeast Nova Scotia was unprecedented and has forever affected victims' families. It has also affected RCMP employees across Nova Scotia, particularly those who were involved in the incident, as well as community members and all Nova Scotians. We owe it to the memory of those we lost to learn as much as we can from this unprecedented tragedy.

A team of H Division employees is coordinating the RCMP's response to the Commission. The team is tasked with:

  • timely disclosure to the Commission of relevant information that is in the RCMP's possession
  • supporting RCMP witnesses who are called to provide evidence before the Commission, with a focus on mental wellness
  • identifying areas within the RCMP that need to be addressed, whether from a training, policy, procedural, resourcing or equipment perspective

No RCMP employees are employed by the Mass Casualty Commission. We are working to support the Commission's important mandate of thoroughly examining the horrific events of April 18 and 19, 2020, in Nova Scotia. It is our hope that this inquiry will provide a full accounting of what happened for the families of the victims and the public.
