Officer identification
Your safety is our priority and we care deeply about the communities we serve.
We regularly reinforce with our officers the importance of self-identification. Residents can also request identification from RCMP police officers. If the circumstances make it safe and reasonable to do so, the officer will provide that identification. In a situation such as a traffic stop, you may ask to see an officer's badge and ID card.
Both the badge and ID card will show the same regimental number and the ID card will have a photo. If you have further concerns, you may call dispatch at 1-800-803-RCMP outside the Halifax region or 902-490-5020 within the Halifax region to confirm the officer's identity.
We are committed to protecting Nova Scotians and we are always on the lookout for suspicious behaviour. Under section 130 of the Criminal Code, it is illegal to impersonate a peace officer. Anyone caught doing so faces up to five years in prison.
If you suspect someone may be using or planning to use real or replica police equipment, clothing or memorabilia to commit a crime, report it to Nova Scotia RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
If you notice anything else concerning, or if anything seems "off," call your local police, Crime Stoppers or, if you believe there may be an immediate danger, call 911.
