Yukon RCMP execute search warrant, 2 men charged with firearm and drug offences

UPDATE TO PUBLIC ADVISORY OF 2023-03-03

During the afternoon of Friday, March 3, 2023, the Yukon RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), with the assistance of Whitehorse Detachment, and members of Yukon RCMP's Critical Incident Program assisted by both the G Division and E Division Emergency Response Teams, executed a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act at 15-505 Black Street in downtown Whitehorse. As a result, a 27-year-old man from Vernon, British Columbia and a 43-year-old man from Edmonton, Alberta are charged with several drug trafficking and firearms related offences.

Quinten Layne Jackson of Vernon, British Columbia and Abshir Ahmed Nur of Edmonton, Alberta were arrested for Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine). Both are charged with the following offences:

  • Possess Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine)
  • Possession of Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Fentanyl)
  • Possession of Schedule IV Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Alproazolam)
  • Possess Proceeds of Crime Over $5000.00
  • Possess Loaded Restricted Firearm without authorization
  • Possess Prohibited Device
  • Possess Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Unsafe Storage of a Loaded Handgun
  • Possess Firearm while Prohibited
  • Possess Ammunition while Prohibited.

Abshir NUR faces an additional count of Possess Proceeds of Crime Under $5000.00.

During the execution of this search warrant, the following items were seized:

  • Approximately $22,000 Canadian currency;
  • A large quantity of believed cocaine;
  • Several grams of believed Fentanyl;
  • A large quantity of Alprazolam pills (Xanax);
  • A loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun;
  • A prohibited high capacity pistol magazine;
  • A large quantity of various rifle and pistol ammunition;
  • Cell phones;
  • Scale and packaging materials;

An associated vehicle, a Toyota Tacoma, has been seized and is subject to further investigation.

Jackson and Nur both appeared in Whitehorse Territorial Court on March 4, 2023 at 10:00 am where they were both remanded into custody. Mr. Jackson's next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 1:00 pm, while Mr. Nur is next scheduled to appear on Monday March 6, 2023 at 1:00 pm.

"Public safety, and the sense of community well-being is at risk when illicit drugs and illegal firearms are sold and possessed by those involved in organized crime in any Yukon community, including downtown Whitehorse" said Superintendent Lindsay Ellis, Criminal Operations Officer for Yukon RCMP. "This investigation is but one example of the ongoing work undertaken by Detachments and the Crime Reduction Unit of the Yukon RCMP to reduce serious crime such as drug trafficking and illegal firearms offences in order to support the safety of Yukoners."
