Wood Buffalo RCMP and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit are investigating the death of a man in Fort. McMurray.
At 12:40 a.m., on Sept. 24, 2023, Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to a report of gunshots in the Thickwood neighbourhood of Fort McMurray. Moments later, another 911 call was received reporting that a man had been found laying unresponsive on Tundra Drive. EMS attended to provide aid; however, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The RCMP is investigating the death as a homicide, and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken carriage of the investigation with assistance of Wood Buffalo RCMP. The identity of the deceased is not yet confirmed, and further information is expected upon completion of an autopsy, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023 in Edmonton.
Investigators are asking for anyone who may have information about this crime or who may have been in the area between 11 p.m., Sept. 23 and 2 a.m. Sept. 24, 2023, to contact police. Additionally, anyone with dash cam or security camera footage of the Thickwood residential streets is asked to get in touch with investigators as soon as possible. Wood Buffalo RCMP are aware of the community concerns arising from three apparent homicides in recent days and are working to identify the individuals responsible. At this time, investigators believe that these are not random attacks against members of the public and that the events are not related to one another.
