Two men deceased following search and rescue efforts

A 58-year-old man and a 33-year-old man, both from Lamèque, have died after falling off a fishing boat off the coast of Lamèque, N.B.

On May 6, 2023, at approximately 8:50 a.m., members of the Lamèque RCMP were requested to assist Ambulance New Brunswick and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) for a report of two men who had fallen off a fishing boat, approximately seven kilometres off the coast of Lamèque.

A 58-year-old man was located shortly thereafter, and died at the scene as a result of his injuries. After a short search, a 33-year-old man was also located deceased.

A helicopter, two airplanes, and three boats from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) along with several local fishing boats assisted in the search and rescue efforts.

The Transport Safety Board of Canada will be assisting in the investigation, as well as a member from the New Brunswick Coroner's Office.
