News release

On May 15, 2023, Whitehorse RCMP arrested one person in downtown Whitehorse related to a robbery with a weapon.

On May 15 at approximately 7:00pm, police received a call from a man who said he had been robbed by a man in possession of an edged weapon. Front line officers and the Yukon RCMP Police Dog Service immediately attended the area and located the suspect within a few minutes, based on the description provided by the victim. Jason Harper, age 49, was arrested without incident.

Jason Harper was held for a first court appearance on May 16, 2023, and was released by the courts. He has been charged with robbery and disobeying a court order.

"No one was physically injured in this incident, but that does not reduce the seriousness of the offence," says Sgt. Dustin Grant, acting Whitehorse RCMP Detachment Commander. "Community safety was top of mind for the police who responded to this call, which resulted in the arrest of the accused."

Although Whitehorse RCMP has attended several high-risk calls for service recently in the downtown area of Whitehorse, police do not believe that this incident is linked to other recent arrests or investigations.
