On February 18, 2023, at 4:00 pm, Nelson House RCMP received a report of three males who were stranded out on the ice as they had intended to walk to a camp near Threepoint Lake, located approximately four kilometers south of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.

The caller advised the three males, aged 36, 33 and 25, were walking towards the camp when they realized that they would not be able to make the return trip due to the cold. Temperatures were in the -30C to -35C range that afternoon.

Two officers from Nelson House each set out on a snowmobile and located the stranded males on the ice, where two of them were observed to not be wearing the proper winter attire for the extreme cold.

The three males were placed in a toboggan that was towed behind the snowmobile and taken to the nursing station for examination for possible frostbite-related injuries. One male was found to have more significant medical issues and was transported to Thompson hospital, where he was treated and has since been released.
