Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP responds to residential disturbance and charges man with aggravated assault

Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP has charged 32-year-old Johnathan Newman with multiple serious offences following an investigation into an assault that occurred during the early morning hours of January 10, 2023.

Police received multiple reports that an assault had occurred during a disturbance at a home in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Upon investigation at the residence, officers obtained evidence of a violent altercation, where Newman allegedly assaulted a man with a weapon and forcibly confined a woman within the residence.

The male victim was transported to the hospital in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, prior to police knowledge of the incident, and then to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's for further medical treatment of serious injuries.

Newman was arrested on January 11, 2023, was held in custody and attends court today. He is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Forcible confinement
  • Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose

The investigation is continuing.
