Addison Smith, a grade 5 student at Bridgewater Junior High School, will be representing the RCMP at the Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Fair at Saint Mary's University in June.

This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the RCMP as Canada's National police force, which is why Addison, daughter of RCMP member Cpl. Dan Smith, selected the RCMP for her heritage fair project: March Forward, which covers the organization's history in Canada.

In March, Addison submitted her project in her school heritage fair and was selected to advance to the South Shore Regional Centre for Education Regional Heritage Fair where she was then selected to advance to the Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Fair.

"Being part of an RCMP family motivated me to choose the RCMP as a Heritage Fair project. I wanted to explore how I fit in with the history of the RCMP, and being the 150th Anniversary made it a special project." - Addison Smith

At the Nova Scotia Heritage Fair, Addison will showcase her work and the history of the RCMP, competing against students from across the province.

As part of her research, Addison interviewed the Commanding Officer of the Nova Scotia RCMP. The interview will be featured in Addison's video submission to Canada's History Young Citizen contest, a competition available to students who competed in a local or regional heritage fair.

"I was very excited to learn about Addison's project – and she was wonderful to chat with. It's important for youth to learn about history, including that of the national police force, and in turn, it might spark interest in a career with the RCMP." – A/Commr. Dennis Daley, Commanding Officer, Nova Scotia RCMP.

On behalf of the Nova Scotia RCMP, we wish Addison the best of luck and thank her for sharing the history of the RCMP with her peers.

May 23, 2023 marks the 150th Anniversary of the RCMP. This major historical milestone is a chance to reflect on the RCMP's storied past and show pride in the RCMP. It also allows us to consider how we continue on the path to a more modern, inclusive and trusted RCMP.
