Following a number of theft-related crimes that started in St. John's and ended in Gander last week, 39-year-old Garry Ivany was arrested on Friday evening by Gander RCMP.
The spree of crimes began early Wednesday morning, following a break and enter at a funeral home in St. John's. A vehicle was stolen from inside the building.
During the afternoon of Wednesday, February 8, 2023, while in Clarenville, Ivany allegedly stole a quantity of tools from Canadian Tire, a cart full of merchandise from Walmart, a quantity of cash from Clarenville Inn, and gas, used to fuel the stolen vehicle, from the Canadian Tire Gas bar on Manitoba Drive. Surveillance footage was obtained from various locations. At the time of the crimes, being a resident of Gander, Ivany's identity was unknown to officers at Clarenville detachment.
Later that evening, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Ivany allegedly stole a quantity of cash from a local bar in Gander. He was captured on video surveillance and was identified by Gander RCMP as being involved in this crime, as well as the crimes committed in Clarenville.
On Thursday morning, the stolen vehicle was recovered at a residence in Glenwood and was seized as part of the investigation.
At approximately 6:15 a.m. on Friday morning, captured on surveillance, Ivany allegedly broke into the Orange Store located on the Trans-Canada Highway in Gander and stole a large quantity of cigarettes from inside.
He was located and arrested Friday night at an apartment complex in Gander, appeared in court via teleconference this past weekend and was remanded into custody.
Ivany attended court today to answer to a long list of charges for theft-related offences and breaches of various court orders, including a probation order. He was further remanded into custody and is next set to appear in court on March 14, 2023.
The investigations are continuing.
