Yukon RCMP Major Crime Unit charge one individual on weapons offences

Yukon RCMP Major Crime Unit (MCU) arrested an individual on weapons-related offences in Faro, Yukon, the result of the ongoing homicide investigation that began after a shooting in October 2021.

On June 1, 2022, police officers with MCU arrested Rory Patrick McGivern, age 56, of Faro, Yukon. Mr. McGivern has been charged with the following offences:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm, s. 91(1) Criminal Code
  • Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, s. 92(1) Criminal Code
  • Possession of a loaded restricted firearm, s. 95(1) Criminal Code
  • Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition readily accessible, s. 95(1) Criminal Code
  • Firearm trafficking, s. 99(1) Criminal Code
  • Ammunition trafficking, s. 99(1) Criminal Code
  • Transfer of a firearm without authority, s. 101(1) Criminal Code
  • Transfer of ammunition without authority, s. 101(1) Criminal Code

Mr. McGivern has been released on conditions with his first court appearance scheduled for on July 6, 2022.

Mr. McGivern is the second person arrested as part of the investigation into the shooting incident in Faro in October 2021. Ralph Bernard Shaw, age 62 of Faro, Yukon, was arrested on October 26, 2021, and has been in custody since his initial arrest related to charges including first degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault. Police do not believe that Mr. McGivern had knowledge that the shootings were going to occur when he allegedly provided a firearm to Ralph Shaw.
