Wood Buffalo RCMP apprehend male with firearm

On Aug. 2, 2022, at approximately 2:15 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a male with a firearm in the Abasand subdivision of Fort McMurray. The male isolated himself in a nearby wooded area until he eventually surrendered to police.

Wood Buffalo RCMP apprehended the male without incident and without injury. Police did not believe there was any risk to the public throughout the incident.

The male remains in police custody as the investigation is ongoing. Wood Buffalo RCMP do not anticipate any further updates.

As of 9:30 a.m. Wood Buffalo RCMP have removed the request to shelter in place for the Abasand area. The RCMP would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance.

August 2, 2022 – 7:35 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP issue shelter in place notice for Abasand Sub Division of Fort. McMurray, Alta. Residents are asked to remain in their homes. Non-residents are requested not to enter.
