Vehicle flees from police in Carbonear, driver arrested and charged

After fleeing from police twice on Sunday, 23-year-old Austin Keels was located and arrested by Harbour Grace RCMP. He is charged with a number of criminal offences.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on May 22, 2022, an officer attempted to stop a car in Carbonear. The driver failed to stop for police. The same vehicle was located a short time later by another officer and fled a second time. The vacant car was located a short time later at an unoccupied residence on Pike's Lane. Through the course of the investigation, the driver was identified as Austin Keels. He was arrested later in the morning at a residence on Mahaney's Lane in Carbonear.

Keels was held in custody over the weekend and attends court today. He is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous driving – two counts
  • Causing a disturbance – two counts
  • Breach of a court release order – two counts

In addition, he is charged with numerous violations under the Highway Traffic Act.
