News release

A 72-year-old woman and a 55-year-old woman have died following a two-vehicle collision near Bartibog, N.B.

On June 4, 2022, at approximately 1:40 p.m., members of the Neguac RCMP, Ambulance New Brunswick and City of Miramichi Fire Department responded to a report of a collision between a car and a pickup truck on Route 8, near Bartibog.

The collision is believed to have occurred when the car, travelling southbound on Route 8, crossed the centreline, which resulted in a head-on collision with the pickup truck, travelling northbound.

Both occupants of the car, a 72-year-old woman and a 55-year-old woman both from Dieppe, died at the scene as a result of their injuries. The driver and sole occupant of the pickup was transported to hospital with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist and a member of the New Brunswick Coroner's office are assisting with the investigation. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine both individuals' exact cause of death.

Route 8 was closed for approximately 5 hours, and has since re-opened. Members of the Tracadie RCMP, Chaleur Region RCMP, and Miramichi Police Force assisted at the scene, as well as members of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Department of Justice and Public Safety.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
