On September 18, 2022, at approximately 4:00 pm, a cell guard at the Steinbach RCMP was taking a beverage to a prisoner in cells. When the 75-year-old male guard was providing the beverage to the prisoner, the prisoner grabbed his arm and pulled it forcefully into the cell through the opening used to provide food for prisoners. The guard sustained substantial injuries. He has been treated and released from hospital.
The prisoner was not injured. Chase Paul, 20, from Selkirk, is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm. He had been detained on a remand warrant related to a Mischief charge at the time of the incident. Paul remains in custody.
RCMP cell guards are employees of the Corps of Commissionaires.
