Remembering Constable Shaelyn Yang

Ottawa, Ontario

News release

On October 18th, BC RCMP Constable Shaelyn Yang was killed in the of duty. She paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to her community and our heartfelt condolences to all who had the opportunity to work with her.

Shaelyn always had passion for helping others. Long before she entered Depot she was an active volunteer in her community of Richmond BC where she worked with Richmond RCMP's Victim Services unit. Before long, her part-time volunteerism blossomed into a full-time career.

Since joining the RCMP in 2019, Constable Yang developed her skills as an officer on the streets of Burnaby, BC. Taking with her all she had learned in her work with victim services, she developed a strong interest in helping Burnaby residents experiencing homelessness. Many colleagues have described Shaelyn as a kind, compassionate and caring person, attributes which no doubt led her to finding her passion for helping people living with mental health and housing challenges.

We will continue to grieve the loss of Constable Yang for many years to come. When a senseless act of this nature takes the life of a fellow colleague we must stand together and never forget the sacrifices that come with this line of work. We must honour the memory of those that have paid dearly and support each other in this difficult time.

The outpouring of support from law enforcement, communities and leaders across Canada and beyond bring solace and hope that we are not alone in this. Constable Shaelyn Yang will be remembered by many and the impact of her life's work will live on in the communities that knew her best.
