Prevent thefts in Whitehorse

June 29, 2022
Whitehorse, Yukon

News release

Whitehorse RCMP has seen an increase in reported property crimes being committed overnight around the city. A number of these offences have been reported at businesses in the downtown area.

Police are currently investigating these reported incidents. One arrest has been made in relation to these investigations. On June 28, 2022, police arrested Michael Nehass, age 38 of Whitehorse, for the following six offences:

  • break and enter, section 348(1)(b) Criminal Code (two counts);
  • possession of break and enter tools, section 351(1) Criminal Code (two counts); and
  • mischief under $5000, section 430(4) Criminal Code (two counts).

Mr. Nehass had his first court appearance later that day and was held in custody.

Though one person has been arrested and charged, police will continue to increase patrols, both on foot and in vehicles, including areas that are experiencing higher reported rates of property crime. Residents are reminded to make sure that their security systems and surveillance cameras are functioning properly. If anyone finds that a break and enter or theft has occurred in their home or business, police recommend the first priority should be to contact the police. Dispatchers or on-duty officers can provide directions about safety and how to preserve evidence until investigators arrive. No matter how minor a theft may seem, information from the public can help police to link and solve crimes, which can prevent further offences from occurring.

Other tips to prevent theft released by Whitehorse RCMP in September of 2021 are still applicable, including securing valuable items that can easily be stolen or grabbed from yards, cars, or storage buildings, like tools and bicycles.

Investigators ask that anyone who may have information regarding this or similar occurrences to contact the Whitehorse RCMP at 867-667-5551. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers online at www.crimestoppersyukon.ca or via phone at 867-667-6715.
