Positive tickets coming to Whitehorse

Whitehorse, Yukon

News release

Whitehorse RCMP officers will be watching to issue tickets to children and youth for certain behaviours this summer. However, this is the kind of ticket you want to get.

Thanks to a partnership with Coyote Video, kids in Whitehorse may receive a "positive ticket" from police for doing things that will keep them and the community safer. When police see kids doing things like wearing helmets on their bikes and scooters, crossing the streets safely at crosswalks, or wearing lifejackets around the water, they may receive a "ticket" that can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at Coyote Video in Porter Creek or Riverdale. These are just some examples of what police may reward kids for.

"These positive tickets are a way for us to recognizing members of the community who are doing something good," says Cst. Karina Moore, who set up the program. "We hope that it will not only reinforce safe behaviour, but also allow police and the community to have positive interactions throughout the summer."

The project, which originally ran in 2020, will run through June, July, and August 2022. Police officers are looking forward to distributing more tickets through the community and rewarding positive actions from Whitehorse youth!
