Portage la Prairie RCMP investigate officer-involved shooting

On June 15, 2022, at approximately 3:50 am, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a call for a break and enter at a business in Portage. Officers responded and encountered the suspect vehicle on Highway 1, near Portage la Prairie, where the officer attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect vehicle rammed the police vehicle several times and attempted to run it off the road, which resulted in the police vehicle being pinned between the suspect vehicle and the trailer it was towing. The officer was able to exit the vehicle. The suspect vehicle swerved toward the officer and then fled. During the incident, shots were fired by the officer involved. The officer received minor physical injuries.

The suspect was apprehended shortly afterward by other officers from the Portage Detachment. A 27-year-old male from Winnipeg was arrested for multiple offences, including Attempted Murder on Police. He was transported to hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The injuries appear non-life threatening. He remains in hospital.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified.

RCMP Major Crime Services is leading the ongoing investigation.
