Leduc RCMP Crime Reduction Unit lay charges following theft of bait vehicle

News release

Leduc RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (LCRU) with assistance from Leduc RCMP Drug Unit, Wetaskiwin RCMP Crime Reduction Unit and the Alberta RCMP Auto Theft Unit have recently laid charges which involved a "bait vehicle."

As property crime is a policing priority, LCRU uses "bait vehicles," which are placed in strategic locations. These "bait vehicles" are monitored by the RCMP, and when persons are located within the stolen vehicle, they will be arrested and charged accordingly. The locations and types of vehicles are not disclosed to ensure the integrity of the program.

On Aug. 5, 2022, LCRU were notified that a "bait vehicle" was activated. LCRU monitored the "bait vehicle" until it was parked at a residence in Edmonton, Alta. LCRU with the assistance of the Leduc RCMP Drug Unit and Edmonton Police Services, executed a search warrant at a residence in south east area of Edmonton.

As a result of the search warrant, the bait vehicle along with a stolen trailer and large quantity of plywood from Edmonton were recovered and returned to the owner.

As a result, a 39-year-old individual, of Edmonton, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (x2).

"Targeting people who steal or who attempt to steal property is just one component of the ongoing crime reduction strategies in the City of Leduc," says Sgt Thomas Dimopoulos, Support Services NCO Leduc Detachment.
