Yellowknife RCMP charge man with aggravated assault

Yellowknife RCMP have arrested and charged a man in connection with an alleged assault that occurred in a downtown business.

RCMP attended to the call for service on Thursday, July 22, at approximately 7:40 PM. A man had been allegedly assaulted and was found unconscious. City of Yellowknife Fire Division EMS transported the man to the Stanton Territorial Hospital for treatment of the injuries. He was then transported by medevac to Edmonton for further treatment of the injuries.

RCMP began an investigation into the incident. With accessibility to video surveillance in the area, the RCMP investigation identified a suspect. They effected the arrest of the male suspect at Yellowknife Airport, on July 24, as the man was attempting to leave the jurisdiction.

Richard Robert Smith, 29 of Alberta, is charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault s.268(2) CC
  • Assault causing bodily harm s.267(b) CC
  • Fail to comply s.145 CC

Mr Smith will next appear in Territorial Court on July 27, 2021.
