Shoplifters arrested for assaulting off-duty RCMP officer in Bay Roberts

Two women, who were attempting to shoplift items from a store, were arrested after one assaulted a store clerk and both assaulted an off-duty RCMP officer in the Bay Roberts Mall on November 6, 2021.

While off-duty in the store, the officer observed an employee asking two patrons to leave the store. Both women became angry and aggressive and one woman assaulted the store employee. The officer identified himself as a police officer and stepped between the women and the employee. The two women continued with aggressive behaviour and assaulted the off-duty officer. The women fled the scene and were located a short time later. Both were arrested and later released. Both women face charges of assaulting a police officer and one of the women faces an additional charge of assault. The two are set to attend court at a later date.

The investigation is continuing.
