The evening of July 18, 2021 there was an increased police presence in the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) community in relation to two separate incidents.
Incident #1:
On May 3, 2021 around 5:30 a.m., La Ronge RCMP responded to a complaint of a firearm discharged at a residence on Bells Point Road in LLRIB.
As a result of extensive investigation by La Ronge General Investigation Section and La Ronge RCMP Detachment, Sampson Roberts from LLRIB was charged with:
- 1 count, discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life, section 244 of the Criminal Code
- 1 count, unauthorized possession of a firearm, section 92(1) Criminal Code
- 2 count, possession of a firearm contrary to order, section 117.01 of the Criminal Code
- 2 count, possession of ammunition contrary to order, section 117.01 of the Criminal Code
A warrant was issued for Roberts' arrest.
Incident #2:
On July 8, 2021 at approximately 7:40 p.m., La Ronge RCMP responded to complaint of a rollover on Highway #165.
Investigation determined there were three occupants in the vehicle. Two left the scene, including an adult male, before police arrived and were not located. A firearm was later recovered at the scene. The remaining occupant was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
As a result of the above investigation, Sampson Roberts was charged with the following:
- 1 count, possession of a firearm, section 92(1) of the Criminal Code
- 1 count, being and occupant of a vehicle with a firearm, section 94 Criminal Code
- 1 count, possession of a firearm while prohibited, Section 117.01 Criminal Code
- 1 count, transport a firearm in a careless manner, Section 86(1) Criminal Code
- 1 count, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, Section 88 Criminal Code
- 1 count, operate a conveyance while prohibited, Section 320.18 Criminal Code
- 2 counts, breach of probation, Section 733.1(1) Criminal Code
A warrant was issued for Roberts' arrest.
Increased police presence in LLRIB community July 18:
La Ronge RCMP, in collaboration with the RCMP Emergency Response Team and RCMP Police Dog Services, arrested Roberts on July 18 around 11:30 p.m. after he ran into a wooded area and was located at a nearby residence.
Roberts will appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at 9:30 a.m.
