RCMP update on search for missing fishermen

January 17, 2021
Hillsburn, Nova Scotia

News release

The RCMP is updating on the search for the five missing fishermen from the Chief Williams Saulis fishing vessel.

Saturday morning, January 16, the Nova Scotia and British Columbia RCMP Underwater Recovery Teams (URT), with assistance from the Canadian Coast Guard and Transportation Safety Board, searched a targeted area using side scan sonar and located an anomaly. Using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), the mass was confirmed to be the Chief Williams Saulis. The fishing vessel was located upright more than two kilometers from the shore of Delaps Cove.

The families of the five missing fishermen have been advised of the finding through the family liaisons. Because of the depth of the vessel, which is greater than 60 metres and exceeds the maximum depth for the RCMP URTs, the next steps to search the inside of the vessel are to be determined.

The Nova Scotia RCMP will be providing the public with updates and information as the search for the missing fishermen continues.
