Ferryland and Marystown, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

Two women were arrested for separate incidents of impaired driving by RCMP NL this past weekend.

On January 16, 2021, at approximately 10:00 p.m., RCMP in Ferryland received a report of a single-vehicle rollover crash on Route 10 in Bay Bulls. Police attended the scene and the 62-year-old driver showed signs of alcohol impairment. She failed a roadside breath test, was arrested for impaired driving and was transported back to the detachment where she provided breath samples that were above the legal limit. The woman was released from custody and is set to attend court at a later date to answer to charges of impaired driving. Police seized the vehicle and suspended the woman's driver's licence.

On January 17, 2021, at approximately 6:30 p.m., an off-duty RCMP officer observed a vehicle swerving over the roadway and traveling at a rate of speed well below the posted speed limit. The officer called in to report the incident and the car was stopped by Burin Peninsula RCMP in Black Brook. The 50-year-old driver was believed to be impaired by a drug. A blood demand was provided and a sample of the driver's blood was collected at the Burin Peninsula Heath Care Centre in Burin. The investigation is continuing as officers await the results of analysis of the blood sample. The woman's driver's licence was suspended and the car was seized and impounded.

RCMP NL continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law, and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
