RCMP Major Crimes Unit lay charges in fatal fire

On Jan 5, 2021 at 3:27 a.m., High Level RCMP along with the High Level Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement south of High Level.

A female witness on scene reported two people were unaccounted for and were believed to still be inside the residence. Based on information provided by the witness, it was determined the fire was suspicious, and a suspect was identified.

Police located and arrested the alleged suspect at a nearby residence, and he was taken by air ambulance for medical treatment.

A male (62) and female (47) were located deceased in the residence. RCMP Major Crime Unit attended and took carriage of the police investigation.

A 42-year-old male of Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement, Alta. has been charged with:

  • Criminal negligence causing death (x2)
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm

Initially manslaughter was contemplated; however, criminal negligence was determined to be the most appropriate charge based on all available evidence.

The 42-year-old male remains in hospital for medical treatment and is scheduled to appear in High Level Provincial Court on Jan. 11, 2021.
