RCMP advises report of shooter at Pasadena Beach a false alarm

August 20, 2021
Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

Deer Lake RCMP determined yesterday that a report, received at approximately 5:15 p.m., of a threat of a shooter at Pasadena Beach was unfounded and the false information was linked to a photo circulating on social media.

Police had received a complaint earlier in the afternoon about a Snapchat photo of a youth with a gun visible in his waistband. Police investigated, questioned the youth and seized the gun pictured, which was determined to be a non-functional airsoft BB gun.

Upon receiving the subsequent complaint of someone planning to "shoot up" Pasadena Beach, police responded immediately and determined quickly there was no threat at the beach, no such shooting threat had been made, and the inaccurate information was being spread based on the picture of the youth they had just questioned.

While it was determined there was no threat in this situation, the RCMP thanks those who made both complaints. Quick action alerting police to possible threats is always recommended.
