News release

Queens district focused their efforts over this past week on road safety. As a result of check stops and patrols all over Queens County, Queens RCMP took three (3) impaired drivers off Island roads, issued multiple summary offence tickets as well as criminal code charges including flight from police and dangerous driving. Several vehicles were also towed because of these offences.

On Wednesday, March 24th, shortly after midnight, police were heading to Oyster bed Bridge to conduct another check point when they came upon a vehicle driving slowly and weaving over the center line. Police stopped the vehicle and the driver showed signs of impairment by drug. The 42 year-old Cavendish man was arrested for impaired driving.

On Thursday, March 25th, shortly before 12:30 am, police were conducting a check point near the Hillsborough Bridge when a 41 year-old Avondale woman was stopped and exhibited signs of impairment. She was arrested for impaired driving and provided samples of her breath which were over the legal limit.

Then, also on Thursday the 25th, shortly after 8:00 am, police were on patrol in Brookfield when police observed a vehicle doing 179 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone. Police immediately activate the emergency equipment and turned to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop and continued toward Hunter River. The suspect vehicle got stuck in traffic in Hunter River and the driver and passenger eventually ditched the vehicle and fled on foot. Police were able to catch up to the two males who were arrested a short distance away. The driver, a 34 year-old Morell man, will face charges of flight from police, dangerous driving and speeding.

Later on this same day, shortly before 3:00 pm, police were on patrol in Cornwall and noted a vehicle displaying an expired registration sticker. When police interacted with the driver, the officer noted a smell of alcohol. The driver, a 29 year-old Middleton man, failed the roadside device and subsequently provided breath samples which were more than twice the legal limit.

All drivers will appear in court at a later date to answer to their charges.
