Portage RCMP respond to drowning at Portage Diversion

On June 4, 2021, at approximately 7:10 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a 17-year-old male who had gone under the water while swimming at the Portage Diversion on Lake Manitoba. The male was not conscious when officers arrived, and EMS were providing medical care. The male was pronounced deceased on scene.

Investigation determined the male was swimming with friends and had entered the water from the beach area. The male slipped off a sandbar into deeper water. He was pulled east of the diversion, where he went under the water. His friends were able to get him to shore and a bystander began CPR until EMS arrived.
