Portage la Prairie RCMP officer assaulted during arrest

April 1, 2021
Portage la Prairie, Manitoba

News release

On March 30, 2021, at approximately 6:25 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report that a 37-year-old male was in breach of a court order by being in contact with another person. Officers attended to a residence, located on Duke Avenue in Portage la Prairie, and observed the male in violation of court imposed conditions.

The male fled from officers when they went to place him under arrest. They pursued the male on foot. He was apprehended a short distance away, and as they attempted to secure the male, he continued to resist arrest and refused to comply with demands made to him. He remained combative and uncooperative throughout the process until such time as he was secured into a police vehicle and transported back to the Portage la Prairie Detachment. During the arrest, an officer was assaulted and received minor injuries.

Once back at the Detachment, the male continued his violent and aggressive behaviour towards the officers until such time as he was placed in a cell.

Michael Bernardin, 37, from Portage la Prairie, was remanded into custody on charges including Resisting Arrest x3, Assaulting a Police Officer, Breaking and Entering, and Fail to Comply with an Undertaking x 2. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
