On September 5, 2021 at around 2:30 p.m., a Saskatchewan RCMP Roving Traffic Unit officer pulled over a vehicle on Highway #16 near Maidstone, SK for having excessive windshield damage and window tint.
As part of a subsequent investigation, Kilo, a Saskatchewan RCMP Police Service Dog, was deployed to assist in a search of the vehicle.
With Kilo's assistance, officers located and seized 300 grams of crack cocaine and 7 grams of illicit cannabis from the vehicle. The crack seized is the equivalent of approximately 600 daily doses.
As a result, the driver, Bryce Zabrick of Edmonton, AB has been charged with:
- 1 count, possession for the purpose of trafficking, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
- 1 count, possession of illicit cannabis, Section 8(1)(b), Cannabis Act.
He will appear in court on November 23, 2021 in Lloydminster.
"Kilo is an invaluable member of our unit," says Cpl. Bryce Pender of the Roving Traffic Unit. "His highly-trained nose helps us find drugs that we may not have been able to detect otherwise. This is just one instance where he has helped us take drugs off the street."
