News release

NT RCMP Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit has partnered with The White Hatter company to provide NT parents and caregivers the opportunity to participate in two webinars the first week in June.

The White Hatter company is an internet safety and digital literacy education specialist company based out of Victoria, BC.

NT RCMP continue to see an increase in internet child exploitation offences across the territory. In response to the growing number of complaints across the north, the ICE unit wants to provide this education component to parents and caregivers, to help equip them with knowledge and skills to pass on to their children. These webinars are free for participants and include a live Q&A portion after the presentation.

Wednesday June 2nd – Online Sexual Predation and Exploitation: What is the Threat, and What Can Caregivers Do to Help Minimize the Risks – 7:00 - 8:45 pm

Topics will include: what is the current threat, the online grooming process and prevention and intervention strategies

Thursday June 3rd – Social Media Safety and Digital Literacy for Parents – 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Topics will include, but not be limited to: challenges youth face today online, online predators, personal digital footprints, concerning signs to look for, exploitation, nudes and sexting

The webinars are available through a link and password. If you wish to receive this information, please send an email to NTInformation@rcmp-grc.gc.ca

We ask this offer be limited to Northwest Territories residents, due to the presentations being limited to 900 participants on a first come first serve basis. If you are not able to listen to the live presentations, the link will be active for 42 hours after to access a recorded version. The Q&A's are only for the live portions.

"This is a great opportunity for parents and caregivers in the North to gain important knowledge that will help to reduce the online risks to children" states Cpl Sandi Nischk, the member in charge of NT RCMP ICE.
