News release

A 24-year-old man is facing seven charges following a series of traffic related incidents in Northeastern New Brunswick.

On May 11, 2021, at approximately 9:20 a.m., members of the Northeast District RCMP received a report of a dangerous driver speeding and passing vehicles on the shoulder of Route 11 in Beresford, N.B.

Shortly after, the same vehicle struck a pickup truck on Route 315 in Laplante before fleeing the scene. The two occupants of the pickup truck, a man and a three-year-old, were not injured.

A short time after that, police located the vehicle in the Dalhousie area and made multiple attempts to stop it. During one attempt, the vehicle almost collided with a marked police cruiser with activated emergency lights, before fleeing the scene.

At approximately 12:20 p.m., a spike-belt was successfully deployed on Route 11 in Madran and the vehicle came to a stop a few kilometres away. Four people in the vehicle were arrested at the scene. Three were later released. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody. While in custody, the man assaulted a police officer and uttered threats.

Michael Robichaud, of Caraquet, appeared in Bathurst Provincial Court on May 12, and was charged with the following:

  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • operation of a motor vehicle while impaired (two counts)
  • failure to remain at the scene of an accident
  • flight from peace officer
  • uttering threats
  • assault

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court on May 17, at 10:30 a.m., for a bail hearing.

The investigation is ongoing.
