On May 7, 2021, at 5:09 a.m., Lloydminster RCMP received a 911 call of an intoxicated violent male with a machete causing a disturbance at a residence in the area of 52 avenue and 35 street in Lloydminster.

Lloydminster RCMP attended the residence and located a 26-year-old male on the rear deck area of the residence. The male was displaying signs of intoxication, was agitated and the machete was noted on the deck of the residence. When the two officers attempted to place the man under arrest and take him into custody, a struggle ensued. An additional RCMP officer attended the scene to provide assistance and the male was taken into police custody.

While in custody on scene, the male exhibited signs of medical distress and first aid was provided by officers and emergency medical services were called to assist. Emergency medical services attended and despite their efforts, the male was declared deceased at the residence.

Two RCMP officers required medical treatment at hospital for minor injuries as a result of this incident.

The original investigation into the actions of the male will remain the responsibility of the Lloydminster RCMP General Investigation Section. ASIRT's investigation will focus on the conduct of the involved officers.

Independent of ASIRT's investigation, the RCMP's internal review process will also be implemented to fully examine the incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member's duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP is fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident.
