February 6, 2021
Leduc, Alberta

News release

The Leduc RCMP responded at 4:33 p.m. today to a 911 call reporting a suspicious package, believed to be an explosive device, at the Premium Outlet Centre. In the interest of public safety, the mall was evacuated and shops were closed.

Given the potential gravity of the situation, other supporting units, including: Edmonton International Airport RCMP, Leduc Traffic Services, Alberta Sheriff's Branch, EMS and the Leduc Fire Department attended as well. Public access to the mall was blocked and the area was contained.

Responding members identified a suspect male who was quickly taken into custody. The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit and Police Dog Services were consulted, and the threat was determined to be a hoax.

The mall was reopened for business at 5:45 p.m.

The public and mall employees are thanked for their patience and cooperation while the RCMP investigated this incident. The investigation continues, and no further details will be provided.
