News release

The Kings District RCMP stopped two impaired drivers over the weekend during check stops in the communities of St. Peters Bay and Cardigan, PEI.

On July 31, 2021, police conducted a checkstop on the Trans Canada Highway in St. Peters Bay. At approximately 12:15 a.m., a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old woman from Summerside was stopped. The driver failed a roadside screening test and was issued a seven-day driver's licence suspension. Her vehicle was towed and impounded for three days at her expense.

A short time later, while conducting a checkstop on Route 4 in Cardigan, police stopped a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man from the Eastern Kings area. The driver displayed signs of impairment and was arrested. He was brought back to the Montague RCMP detachment where he provided samples of his breath, indicating he was twice over the legal limit. A 90-day driver's licence suspension was issued and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days at his expense. He was later released and is scheduled to appear in Georgetown Provincial Court at a later date.

The RCMP in PEI is urging drivers to plan their outings ahead of time and to make sure they have a safe and sober way back home. The RCMP will continue to conduct check stops around the island as part of their enforcement strategy.

If you see a suspected impaired driver, call 911 immediately. Your description of the driver, vehicle, licence plate number and direction of travel can assist police in finding and getting an impaired driver off the road.

Together we can work on keeping island roads safe.
